SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Carnival, Grenada – Jouvert and Mass

Do not worry everyone!

We have not fallen off the edge of the planet.

The humans have just trapped me in at an anchorage without any internet connection.  It is a bit of a trek to find a place where there is WiFi.

The humans have been so busy with boat repairs and ‘chilling’ in the evenings with friends on the beach……..so they rarely get me over to a connection to up date the blog.  But I thought it was about time to tell you about their trip to Carnival.

Jouvert

Grenada’s Carnival starts with an early morning parade called ‘Jouvert’ (pronounced Jew-vay).  This pre-dawn ritual is not for the faint at heart.  It is designed to scare away evil spirits and includes men covered in old engine oil, wearing horns and masks and carrying chains.

Trucks loaded down with speakers provide the motivational music.

As the day dawns the dancing revellers become mixed sex and oil is replaced with paint.

Each group in the parade have their own colour and music.

Everyone ends up dancing in the street together with the parade and getting covered in paint.

But getting all covered in paint is part of the fun.

With all the evil spirits scared away everyone is warmed up for Mass.

Afternoon and Evening Mass

The term ‘Mass’ in the Caribbean means ‘party’.

In Grenada there is two days of Mass.  No sooner does Jouvert end then the first Mass starts in the afternoon.  This parade is more for families and includes the big costumes.

Hope you enjoyed a little glimpse of Carnival in Grenada.

The humans do not have any ‘big’ plans, besides working on the boat, this month, but I will still try to give you an update soon.
