With autumn approaching, it is time to get ready for the next sailing season. Hurricane season ‘officially’ ends in November.
The statistical chance of a hurricane hitting the Caribbean greatly decreases in December. So it is time to say goodbye to all the friends we have made in Grenada and head off on new adventures.
Before we ‘rush away’ there are a few more things that ‘broke’ on the boat to fix, lots of laundry and some stocking up on food and toiletries to do.
We moved over to Mt. Hartmond Bay to make ‘getting stuff’ easier.
There is also an extensive abandon hotel complex for me to run around in. They are the orange buildings on the left in the satellite photo.
If you are human, there are also lots of other things to do in Mt Hartman Bay. The local Marina and bar, Secret Harbour, has kept up the volleyball court in the abandon hotel.
Local cruisers also lead Yoga and Tia Chi on alternating mornings.
In the evenings there are sometimes special parties.
Halloween is a big thing here and all the kids ‘trick or treated’ the boats. At dark they joined the grown ups to dance the night away.
Have a try at these ones.
Well done if you guessed jelly fish and nurse shark.
With all this socializing it is remarkable that the humans are getting anything done, but they are.
Like all sailing vessels they are looking for fair winds to send us North. The forecast is good for next week.
Because we are dependent on the weather, none of our plans are ‘set in stone’, but we have a few places we are aiming to spend some time at.
To start with, we are going to sail North to Dominica. This means jumping over all the islands along the way, but we visited these on our way south last season.
This will, hopefully, give us more time to visit the string of islands going North.
We hope to see the natural wonders of Dominica and the other islands, heading north, to hopefully end up in Antigua for Christmas.
Then we will make our way to the British Virgin Islands. If they are as nice as everyone says they are, we might be getting a visit from my Nanna and Granddad.
Then we hope to make our way to Cuba to meet my cousins Shannon and Connor for March break.
For the remainder of the sailing season we will head up the Bahamas. We may go as far North as the south-east coast of the US to find a cheap place to lift out the boat and do some work on her for the hurricane season. We have talked to other cruisers and they have made some great suggestions.
Our plans may be a little optimistic this year. We do hope to visit most of the remaining Eastern Caribbean, leaving us free to visit the Western Caribbean next year. But we all know about ‘best laid plans’. So watch this space.
For now I will enjoy my last few days of freedom, running about on the ‘dog friendly’ island of Grenada. It is not going to be so easy for me on many of the islands further north.
The human’s will also get out and say goodbye to many of the friends they have made here. Some they hope to meet along the way others have chosen the southern Caribbean as their home ‘stomping grounds’.
It is hard to believe the summer is over so fast.
Time for new adventures.
