Company is coming and we need to make our way North to the British Virgin Islands to pick them up.
But before we go we need to say goodbye to many friends we made along the way.
Some of the gang are not planning to travel any further North, while others are planning to cross the Atlantic back to EuropeWe also need to stock up on food for everyone
With all that settled we headed off for the overnight trip to the BVIs in light winds. It was a down-wind roll all the way, but not uneventful.
After the sun had set, and before the moon rose, a passenger made a ‘crash land’ on our deck.
Although he was quiet all night, our ‘cheeky’ stow away perked up in the morning
Something new for me, sharing my cockpit with a pigeonWith the first sight of land, our stow away was off safe and sound
The trip was also plagued with GPS problems again. The chart plotter was displaying a big error in our position.
Wonder if this guy had GPS problems too
We had timed our arrival for daylight, so we able to use our paper charts and ‘eyeball’ navigation to get ourselves into the islands.
We sailed up the coast of Virgin Gorda and checked into customs at Spanish Town.
After checking into the BVIs we headed over to Beef Island and Trellis Bay, an anchorage right beside the Airport, to meet our guests.
Trellis Bay is not only a great place to pick up your guests (it is a 5 minute walk to the arrival gates) but it is also a pretty groovey place
There are a selection of cafes and ‘chilled out’ bars on the shore lineThere is also a large artistic community here. Ceramic and metal work are the key ones here.
One of the cafes here has its walls covered in ‘words of wisdom’.
We found their ‘anti-bigamy’ campaign amusing
But Trellis Bay is most famous for its Full Moon PartiesFood, drink and entertainment is provided on the beach with a grand finally of lighting these amazing metal works filled with woodWe talked our guests into sticking around a few days for the festivities
We used up the free days to teach them how to play dominoesWe taught them about the medicinal properties of Caribbean spices like nutmeg. Too bad it comes on top of a rum cocktailAnd we took them to the beach on the far side of the anchorageTo teach them how to relax
All tanned and relaxed….it is time to partyIt is the night of the full moon and a the party is startingLots of food on offer on the beachThe evening started off with fire dancers
Then they started lighting these amazingly cut metal balls along the shoreline beachThe scenes cut into these metal balls were fascinating
Then everyone gathered on the water’s edge to see the first of the metal balls there lit
Once these were going they started lighting the metal men
Fire is always fascinating and frighteningIt almost seems alive
A great way to please a crowdThe band started and everyone got up dancingA great way to wear off all that food and drinkWe think we are getting their holiday off to a good start
Anyone else planning on attending the Full Moon Party at Trellis Bay, Beef Island, we definitely recommend it. It was a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
