With not much time left before company comes, we sailed to the capital city of St.Thomas, Charlotte Amalie, so we can stock up and pick them up.
The harbour at Charlotte Amalie is quite a cool anchorage. It is very sheltered and you can anchor right off the town, just as long as you do not mind cruise liners for company. Right in front of the anchorage is a dingy dock in the centre of town. Watch yourself as you cross the road, even though this is a territory of the United States, they drive on the left hand side of the road????? And you will love the local open buses. Fort Charlotte protected this harbour and the commerce on its shores. Now the old port storehouses have been turned into fancy restaurants and shops. If you instead head to the east end of the harbour you can use the dingy dock in the Marina here to access grocery stores and laundry mats. I must admit the laundry mat was an unusual step back in time. A bustling warehouse of antiquated machinery and American daytime television. Not to be missed by the nostalgic types. One of the best parts of being anchored off a city is the lights at night.
