SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Great Abaco Island, Marsh Harbour – A reprovisioning stop

The shallow and protected Sea of Abaco is nestled between a string of cays and Great Abaco Island.

The largest town in this area, and the third largest in all the Bahamas, is Marsh Harbour.  With multiple grocery, hardware and beer stores, along with a coin operated laundry, it makes a great place to stock up.

Groceries are expensive in the Bahamas, but we had run out of all but the basics.  Marsh Harbour is the most economical place around to restock and has a deep enough harbour for us to get in.

With light winds predicted we did not bother to drop the shade canopy and instead used it to keep us cool as we drifted round the shallow sandbars of the Sea of Abaco on the foresail alone.  The winds were so light we hand gibed (switched the side) the jib.

We passed some beaches at the entrance of the harbour and found plenty of room to set the hook in the grassy bottom.

They have the place well set up for boaters.  They have even added a floating dock to the side of the ferry docks to make it easier to tie up your dingy.

The town itself is ‘not much to look at’.  It is very ‘North American’ with wide roads, usually lacking any pavement (side-walk), strip malls and large parking lots.  Clearly designed for car drivers. But, even so, you can get just about everything you need within walking distance.

We are real close to the US now.  I am sure it has a much stronger influence here.  We did find some cool abandon fire trucks on the walk to the grocery store.

We dodged the regular showers and got everything done and ready to continue up the chain of outer Abaco cays north.
