SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Bahamas, Hoffman Cay – Christmas in the Caribbean

It was the day before Christmas and all the lights were up, the Turkey thawed, smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce ready for Eggs Benedict in the morning.  Even have a bottle of Prosecco, from Auntie Lisa.

With everything at the ready anchored up in the middle of ‘no where’ there was nothing left to do but go on a little adventure………

We heard there was a Blue Hole on the main Cay that you could hike to and go for a swim.  So off in the kayaks the humans headed off in search.

Sorry about the cloud cover.

The humans paddled off to the west side of Hoffman Cay and over the Great Bahama Bank.  Before I go forward we must make a special note of this incredible sand bank.  It is so shallow and large that it can be seen clearly from space.

People sailing over it often just anchor anywhere if night comes and they want to stop.  It is incredible!

From the beach the trail to the Blue Hole is clearly marked by hanging flotsam. A short hike through the Bahamian low lying dry shrub brings you to the cliff edge of the sink hole now filled with sea water.

Quite a striking thing to just 'come across' when the shrub opens up. This Blue Hole is so deep, that despite the crystal clear waters, it just drops straight down into blackness

From here we could go for a swim safely. But we were a little nervous. Do not laugh, we dive into the open Ocean all the time, but here was something ominousing about jusmping into a deep, dark hole and being the only food around.

The humans had a little look around first to make sure no monsters from the deep came up to eat them. Silly Humans!

And Christmas day has finally arrived!

Yes Aunty Helen and Uncle Steve. My santa suit still fits.
