Guatemala, Rio Dulce, Castillo de San Felipe de Lara – Taking a day off to do some sight seeing on the river

The Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, Rio Dulce, Guatemala

The ‘whining’ humans complained that they have been working too hard on the boat…

sails stripped off the boat, shade canopies up, cockpit gutted and cleaned, bilges cleaned and repacked, forepeak cleaned and repacked, engine mounts cleaned and painted, oil change, transmission fluid change, fuel filters changed, fuel tanks filled, engine room and bilge cleaned, sewing machine repaired, windlass cover restitched, mast boot repaired, new dingy fuel can cover, new hatch covers, new cockpit seat covers, binimi roof repaired, new wind catcher for main cabin, old covers washed, galley gutted, cleaned and repacked, old charts and guide books organized and sold at jumble sale, tried and failed to repair one note book and our only tablet…funeral date set for later.

…….even I get exhausted watching them work.

Guess they deserve a day off.

I fancied another siesta, but sent them off in their kayaks to explore the Castillo de San Felipe de Lara.  It is a fort at the entrance of Lake Izabal built by the Spanish in 1644 to protect the nearby port from attacks by English pirates.

Cacti that climb trees. The trees offer support, hold the cacti out of the water and, if they climb high enough, they can get sunlight at the top of the tree canopy.

How about a sail boat. How did they get that up here? They looked like they had been there for a while.
